> A gunman suspected of killing six people and injuring 16 others in the southern Polish city of Kraków on Saturday was “fascinated by far-right ideologies” and appears to have acted alone, Poland's interior minister has said.

> The remarks offered the first indication of a possible motive for the mass killing which shocked Poland, where such incidents are extremely rare.

> The suspect is a 25-year-old Polish national who drove a black Subaru car into Kraków's historic Main Market Square at around 3 p.m. and opened fire at random passersby, according to officials and police.

> Six people, including four women and two men, were killed, while 16 others were injured, including two police officers.

> 'Fascinated by far-right ideologies'

> Speaking at a news conference in Kraków, Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński said all the indications were that the attacker “held very, very radical views” and was “fascinated by far-right ideologies.”

> "Police have no grounds to conclude that more than one person was responsible for this terrible massacre. It appears there was only one attacker," he added.

> The gunman was shot and detained following an exchange of fire with officers and taken to a hospital, where he underwent surgery.

> Camouflage clothing and bulletproof vest

> Regional police spokesperson Katarzyna Cisło said the attacker had been wearing camouflage clothing and a bulletproof vest and carrying a long, military-style gun.

> Police recovered several other firearms and a large quantity of ammunition from his vehicle, she added.

> Investigators were also carrying out inquiries at the suspect's home, Kierwiński said.

> Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz denied claims that the attacker was a Polish soldier, saying he had never served in the armed forces or had any connection to the military.
