I gave up using swipe typing after the Nth time it changed a word 10 words back just as I pressed send. Maybe this is why in a few of those cases but not generally. Having to proofread messages after sending didn't seem efficient. But thank you for doing this... a little light shone on something goes a long way.

For some reason for me typing now feels like walking on ice. Sure sometimes it successfully corrects a mistyped word - but it so often changes a correct word to an incorrect one that I think I’m worse off overall.

I picked up my old iPhone 7 last week and typing on iOS16 on that MUCH smaller screen somehow feels MORE accurate.

Something’s gone seriously wrong with predictive text.

      Do you mean iOS15? The 7 didn't get 16

      • jonplackett 8 hours ago

Probably yeah - I was just kinda guessing at how old the iOS was.

All I know is it was OLD. But somehow the keyboard was way better

This isn’t limited to swipe, they don’t auto-suggest either. Some of the phrases in the full world list are really innocent too:

- are some important

- fish finger(s)

- he’s hot

- is the worst

- sneak peak

- thank god

- you suck

  • Moomoomoo309 19 hours ago

Is "thank god" in there because it wants to capitalize God? That could help explain it, maybe?

  • riddley 20 hours ago

Probably best that it doesn't do sneak peak since it's sneak peek.

Yeah, I just wonder how it got in the initial September 2020 list of explicit phrases?

A mistake or accident? A workaround for a swipe autocorrect bug? Or some really obscure slang, somehow ending up on their list of obscure phrases?

calmingsolitude 16 hours ago

Why do some of the listings say “Swipe works”? Why are they listed in the first place?

Author here: because they’re still blocked from autocomplete/keyboard suggestions. The distinction only exists in English.

WTF, it changes words after you already typed it and moved on?

That's worse than the HN title of merely just not suggesting the phrase, that is some 1984 going on.

> After “Left wing”, swiping conspiracy makes the keyboard rewrite the word before it. Wing becomes wrong,

Same energy as turning the gun emoji to a water gun. You don't help anything by getting in the way of what people are trying to communicate.

Seems to me they are trying avoiding accusation of bias/politics and stop 'Apple autocorrects to X' going viral

Why did someone buy a full domain for this.

  • solyin a day ago

Depending on your socioeconomic status, the $12/year for a .com is either cheap or expensive, and while I hesitate to claim I'm disgusting wealthy (because I'm not) I, (I'm not the OP) at least rich enough to spend $12/year amongst other life's expenses. Having a custom domain name for a thing is a way of driving people to the domain, instead of focusing on yourself. It feels less self-aggrandizing to point at a project on its own domain name, rather than say hey, look at my blog which is branded with my name. What's important is the project, not me.

I appreciate it, I don't even own any iProducts but I find it interesting to see what phrases or words are considered for censorship from a mainstream mega corp.

Apparently it won't autocomplete cunning linguist, but it doesn't block master debater so half of that Austin powers joke (surely borrowed from an earlier comedian) will still autocomplete. Groovy baby yeah!

because a catchy domain seems to be 30% of marketing these days, and marketing seems to be 70% of success

But they're not selling anything? It just feels like a blog post.

Perhaps they are afraid someone could something pedestrian and it guesses something saucy or spicy.
