If you get one good domain, subdomains work really well.
It worked for yahoo, it works for me. I have a couple more domains for things where it makes sense, but [descriptive word].[my usual domain] works for most things and [descriptive word].[my old domain] works as a test area when I think my 0 users might be inconvenienced if I test in production.
This is the way - 99% of my stuff is Caddy-proxied through subdomains to a single Debian VPS and works great even when deluged with the occasional HN-levels of traffic.
